Old Tavern Farm Flowers is part of the Old Tavern Farm agricultural businesses that includes thoroughbred breeding, a winery and a distillery located in Saratoga Springs, New York.  We grow a wide variety of flowers for cut flower production, specializing in native blooms that reflect the season, our climate and our distinctive bouquets. We are looking for the right person to lead our fast-growing team!  This is a hands-on year-round job which participates in all phases of the cut flower business.  We strive to grow high quality, long-lasting, distinctive blooms.
 
Job duties include:
 
This person supervises and works alongside 3-5 seasonal/part time employees to produce high quality, cut flowers for farmers markets, wholesale accounts, subscriptions, and special events.
 

  • Oversees all aspects of the farm’s flower production from soil preparation to harvest. 
  • Ensure a steady supply of a variety of marketable flowers from February through December.
  • Selects and orders suitable flowers and bulbs for growing.
  • Maintains and improves crop plan, seed order, sowing schedule, succession planting and inventory.
  • Conducts soil analyses, site assessments, prepares and maintains growing media and site selection.
  • Maintains crops by planting, weeding, identifying and treating pests and diseases, de budding, fertilizing and watering.
  • Participates in the design of various flower products and flower related events.
  • Is part of the team that helps develop a strategic growth plan and marketing initiatives.    
  • Daily early morning harvest 5-6 days per week at the height of the season. 
  • Organizes a bouquet-making process that practices efficiency and quality.
  • Continuously dries flowers throughout the growing season to ensure a robust dry flower program in the fall/winter.
  • Maintains and keeps clean farm tools, equipment and production buildings.
  • Oversees quality control and inventory of our roadside stand.
  • Available to work weekends and farmers markets.
  • General farm work and participation in projects as needed.
 
The ideal applicant is knowledge and experience with flower growing, soils, farm production, dried flowers, tractoring, practices for fertilizing and pest control, green house production, cultivation, and harvest.
This is a full time position.
 
Pay based on experience 
40 hours a week, work week will vary depending on seasonality 
Preferred two years’ of experience on a production farm
Cut flower growing experience required
Comfortable working in all weather conditions
Ability to lift, blend and transfer items up to 50 lbs
Floral design skills and arts/craft background are a plus
Rain or Shine/Warm or Cold Temperatures
Ability to monitor quality control and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment
