American-Jewish Music & African-American Music
Robert Cohen, a well-known teacher and lecturer on American folk and popular music, ethnic music and Jewish music, will be presenting his musical conversation between blacks and Jews.
American-Jewish composers have incorporated African and African-American musical idioms- blues, jazz, ragtime; reggae and world music and even gospel and rap- to express the exuberance and vitality of contemporary Jewish life, meanwhile creating much of America’s most celebrated popular music. At the same time, Jewish musical themes have reached out to Africans and African –Americans who have enriched them musically and enhanced their message.
